New rules regarding asylum will go into effect in January 2021

DEC 13, 2020

New rules regarding asylum will go into effect on January 11, 2021. These are extreme measures. One example is the rule effectively eliminating asylum for those who arrived in the U.S. after transiting through a third country, basically eliminating asylum for most Cubans and Central Americans. Another rule being implemented would eliminate asylum for victims of domestic violence and violence at the hands of the Maras/gangs in Central America.

It is very clear that the Trump administration would like to eliminate asylum, a right established in several international treaties (signed by the United States). In my humble opinion, these rules will be short lived and likely will be enjoined quickly by the federal courts. I doubt they survive in any form.
